About Maeli

Hi, I’m Maeli, the creative mind behind MAELI Designs, LLC. My journey with yarn began at the age of five when my great aunt taught me to crochet. By the age of nine, I had taught myself to knit through kits and library books. Throughout my school years, I enjoyed making accessories and clothes for myself, friends, and family!

While pursuing a degree in computer engineering, I used knitting and crocheting as a way to de-stress from my studies. Since I spent so much time making items for myself, I decided to try selling digital patterns to help pay for my craft supplies. Inspired by my technical background, I developed auto-calculating Google Sheet patterns that automatically determine the number of stitches and rows based on body measurements for a customized fit.

One day, while designing my Tapestry Tee pattern, I envisioned a tool to make colorwork easier without having to stop and untangle yarn. My husband, an avid 3D printing enthusiast, helped bring this idea to life, which led to the invention of the Colorwork Wheel. Now, we proudly offer 3D printed items for crochet and knit, combining my love for fiber arts with his technical skills. Together, we invent and design tools that make crafting even more enjoyable and efficient.

About Reed

Hi, I’m Reed, and I’ve always loved tinkering and building things. From custom computers to exploring new technologies, I’ve had a passion for figuring out how things work from a young age. In 2014, while studying computer engineering, I was introduced to 3D printing and was instantly captivated by its potential—the idea that you could design and create whatever you imagined using just a printer.

At MAELI Designs, LLC, Maeli and I combine our shared background in computer engineering with our individual passions. One day, while she was designing a crochet pattern, Maeli envisioned a tool to make colorwork easier, keeping yarns from tangling. She asked if I could help bring the idea to life with 3D printing, and from there, we developed the Colorwork Wheel. That project marked the beginning of our journey into creating tools that blend engineering and crafting.

As a husband-and-wife engineering duo, we approach every project as a collaboration, using our combined technical skills and creative problem-solving to enhance each other’s ideas. Together, we design 3D-printed tools that make the crafting process smoother and more efficient, while also bringing innovation to the fiber arts world.

For me, 3D printing is about more than just technology—it’s about constantly learning and finding new ways to solve problems. Each tool we create is an opportunity to push boundaries, combining engineering with creativity in ways that inspire others to bring their ideas to life.
